We’ve all worked for a company that has lost top talent because of a lack of advancement opportunities. So how does one promote an employee? First up, you need to be clear on the required skills; you want the candidate to meet the demands and responsibilities of the position. Shortlist employees that have the right skill set or skills that are close enough to what the role requires. If you find yourself stuck with too many options, add another criteria. After identifying shortlisted candidates, challenge the shortlisted candidates by giving them authority over a project with a scale smaller than the one they may handle if promoted. Be sure to actively support the successful candidate.
